PANTO-MONIUM!

Over the past 3 years November has become synonymous with our twisted fairytale, musical comedy pantomimes. First came Jack and the Beanstalk, then Blow Me! (a cheeky take on the story of the Big Bad Wolf), and now comes Pricked! A Sleepingly Beautiful Pantomime. All aspects of our team and organization have been poured into this production through the fall to ensure every attendee gets a belly laugh and a seismic dose of joy. (and we are feeling pretty great about the prospects of just that!)

So fittingly, you’ll notice this month’s blog has an emphasis on Pricked! From our interview with Princess Beauty herself, a look behind the scenes, and brand new group bookings sale that JUST launched. This also feels like a fitting time to remind Radical Access donors of $25+/monthly that they are all gifted 2 compimentary tickets to Pricked! (and the entire 2026 Winter/Spring Mainstage Season).

OH YEAH! The 2026 Winter/Spring Season has been announced! Lots on that below, as well as this year’s 4 FOR $50 ticket packages, just in time for the holdiay season.

With December in our sights, we’ve also got a slew of traditions about to kick off in a dominoes fashioned flurry. More on this later in the blog…

UNDER THE HAT: CHICHI EGEREONU RETURNS!

Tom: Welcome Back ChiChi! For those who may not be familiar with your work, or missed your first interview with us, can you start us off with a brief rundown of your relationship to the arts?

ChiChi: Hi Tom, thanks for having me again! I fell in love with the idea of acting when I was around 7 years old after visiting my mum on the set of Tinsel, a Nigerian TV drama she acted in for a couple years. The thought of memorizing lines scared me though so I didn’t take my first acting class until I was in university at CBU. Our final project was performing a monologue at the Elizabeth Boardmore One Act Play Festival. I was very nervous but fell in love with acting all over again. From there I carried on to be in more

plays at the Boardmore including Controlled Damage and Murder in the Cathedral.  I first got involved with the HAT in the spring of 2024 when I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop for the play Lay-Up. Then during the summer season I was part of the ensemble in the dinner theatre remount of Dream at Sacred Heart and a Savoy co-production of Mamma Mia! It wasn’t until the fall when I was part of the cast of TomorrowLove™, that I actually performed a show with the HAT in the HAT building. After that I was part of the casts of A Christmas Carol, A Mirror, The Producers, Back to Broadway, Hairspray, and now Pricked!

Tom: As readers can probably tell, you have quickly become a mainstay on the mainstage, which I think really speaks to you your skill and ability to collaborate. We will get to Pricked! shortly, but can you tell me a bit about what you’ve been up to since we last spoke to you? I believe it was right before A Mirror. I know you’ve been up to a few things at the HAT and around the island.

ChiChi: Yeah! After A Mirror I was in the ensemble for the HATs production of The Producers and Back to Broadway at Sacred Heart, both shows probably had more costume changes than I’ve ever had in my entire theatre journey. Then I was in Louisbourg for about a week where we shot the entire 2nd season of StarMaker Academy. After that I was back at the HAT for the final show of the summer season: Hairspray, where I got to play one of The Dynamites and in turn feed my girl group fantasy a little bit.

I had never been to a panto prior to seeing the ones put on at the HAT but I had so much fun being part of the audience. It was such a new experience being allowed to respond to the characters and witnessing them acknowledge the audiences responses.
— ChiChi Egereonu

Tom: You’re one of our regular performers who effortlessly fit into straight plays as well as musicals. Can you tell me a bit about your approach to your acting? Is your process different between the two types of productions?

ChiChi: When it comes to lines, my approach for both straight plays and musicals is understanding my character’s motivations and why they would respond situations and other characters in a specific way. The process differs though in terms of how my character expresses themself facially. In straight plays, instead of instructing myself to look sad, happy or relieved, I’m thinking to myself, “what does my character gain or lose at this moment?” And my face usually brings forth emotion I want to portray. But with musicals, I find myself not only thinking about what my character wants but also what the person opposite me may want during a song and how to portray both their wants and mine.

Tom: And now you’re diving (or freefalling) into the land of pantomimes, which is it’s own beast of fun! I know you saw the first two pantos (Jack and the Beanstalk: A Musical Comedy Pantomime and Blow Me! A Big Bad Musical Comedy), had you ever been to a panto prior? What was your experience of them as an audience member, and how did you feel when you were asked to play such a big part of this year’s production?

ChiChi: I had never been to a panto prior to seeing the ones put on at the HAT, but I had so much fun being part of the audience. It was such a new experience being allowed to respond to the characters and witnessing them acknowledge the audiences responses. When I was asked to play Princess Beauty I was both excited and nervous because there’s a lot more singing required of me than I’m used to, but the rehearsal process has been so fun, encouraging and has definitely brought out a part of me that I didn’t know I had.

Tom:
For anyone who doesn’t know, you’re playing Princess Beauty of Sleeping Beauty fame. What’s this character like, and where are we meeting her at the start of the show?

ChiChi: Princess Beauty, like most princesses, has been very sheltered but my favourite thing about her is that this hasn’t stopped her from being expressive and standing up for herself. We meet her on her 21st birthday - full of excitement for her future.

Tom: I know the soundtrack is ABSOLUTELY filled to the brim with bops. Are there any songs or numbers that hold a particular place in your heart?

ChiChi: Yes there’re so many, but my favourite is Toxic by Britney Spears. It was one of the songs I’d constantly listen to on my iPod as a kid, so I was really excited when I found out it was part of our soundtrack

Tom: GREAT choice. Honestly just one of the many iconic tunes packed into this ride. You’ve been so generous fitting us into your busy rehearsal schedule and life, so my final question is: if I have a friend who’s never been to a panto before, what would you say to them to convince them to give it a shot?

ChiChi: Come see a brand new exciting retelling of the story of Sleeping Beauty filled to the brim with many of your favourite songs, local talent, puppets and even you if you’re willing!

Tom: Thank you so much for doing this again ChiChi! Break allll the legs and have the most fun!

ChiChi: Thank you too Tom!
